Originating in Australia, the original idea of a men’s shed was to create a resource that would provide a space for men to meet to make or repair things, socialise, and help to overcome the issue of social exclusion that often affects men later in life.
The Camberley and District Men’s Shed (C&DMS) started from an initial meeting held in 2021 when an embryonic group of trustees got together and registered the C&DMS as a charity. We then set about raising funds from various sources whilst also searching for suitable premises. In 2022 we were able to secure a lease from Surrey Heath Borough Council for the London Road Pavilion and after various delays we were able to start work this year to repurpose the premises into workshop and social spaces.
We have created two well equipped workshops, including equipment that would not generally be found in a home workshop, some of which has been purchased using grants from various sources, or which has been generously donated privately. And we are also planning to have space where electronic or IT projects, for example, can also be undertaken. Of course, we also have a kitchen and a social room.
As one of over 600 Men’s sheds in the UK, Camberley and District Men’s Shed (C&DMS) has joined a worldwide group of thousands of sheds operating worldwide. We belong to the UKMSA (United Kingdom Men’s Shed Association) the organisation that provides help and assistance to their members who want to set up new sheds, want ideas for fundraising, or help with insurance for example.
